So, our DVD recorder went south today, forcing the purchase of a new one. Immediately. So, I called the two local electronics stores that might carry such a thing, Best Buy (Worst Buy) and Circuit City (Short Circuit). Below is a chart illustrating my experience with both.
| Task |
Worst Buy |
Short Circuit |
| Answer phone |
Barely - took 5 keypunches to get to right dept. |
Took 2 keypunches to get to DVD dept. |
| Hold Time |
Indefinate - never answered phone in over 3 min on first try
1.5 min on 2nd try |
Negligible |
| Knowledge |
Barely knew what a DVD recorder was, let alone whether or not they carried something comparable to what I wanted |
Knew straight away what they had, the price, and how it stacked up to what I had. |
| Courtesy |
Put me on hold (2nd time, after I got through) becuase "she was with a customer & had to get back to them" |
Just the facts. No sales pitch. Pleasant |
| Product Availabilty |
Didn't have comparable model from same brand in stock, had no idea what else might be close to what I wanted |
Had what I wanted. |
What a hell-hole it was dealing with Best Buy. Shitty phone system, on hold forever, no one knew anything... Blah. Frankly, I've never given much thought to Circuit City. However, I know where I'll be going now on when I need to make local electronics purchases!
Don't you shop Amazon like the rest of us? Even with shipping they are often cheaper.
I just would like to second that Dealing with Bestbuy & their Product Performance Plans is terrible!!!! I have never seen a company as big as Bestbuy have such total disregard for their customer!! Am working on 33days trying to get a lousy TV repaired. Forgot to order parts, cancelled appt. without calling cust. Total Desregard!!
Circuit City may be great when you are getting ready to purchase an item, but when you buy an item as a Christmas gift and the person who receives the gift realizes that the item has a manufacturer's defect, don't bother asking Circuit City to take care of the problem for you if it's been past 14 days. At 15 days, they will tell you to send the item back to the manufacturer to get it replaced by a refurbished model b/c they will not do anything. They will be rude on the phone with you and hang up on you. They will run you in circles. Everyone will pass you on to someone else. I have never had such horrible customer service at any company ever.
I have been employed at Circuit City for about 11 months now. I work in the camera dept. in Minnesota. Not only do we have 2 Best Buys right around our store, and not to mention are located in the state where Best Buy has their headquarters. We have been beating both of the stores, which is something to say. As a result, we were curious as why this is happening, so we asked. Customer service and knowledge was the main reason. I hear that more than anything, customers telling me that they go to Best Buy for the little things, but if they are going to buy something big, they will come to Circuit City. I was just offered a job with Best Buy, their new store manager walked into Circuit City, honest to God, and offered about 10 people jobs. Seriously people, Best Buy knows that Circuit City employs only people that know something, I took about a 2 months of training before I even sold something, you will get knowledge at Circuit City. The only reason I passed up the pay raise was because there is no such thing as job security at Best Buy, I know about 10 people that have worked there and been canned for no reason. I have been reading comments about Circuit City vs. Best Buy because I really care about my customers. I don?t work off commission and frankly, don?t take too much pride in working for a store, I work there for money, and hell, while I'm there, make some customers happy. Look, I know that we all have horrible experiences with both places, and it really depends on who is working, but give Circuit City a shot before going to Best Buy where they treat you like just another person with cash. Usually Circuit City wont be as busy, and people can take more time with their customers, I average about 30-40 min. with each of my customers, just telling them about cameras, because I have a passion for them. I am a senior in high school and have no plans for making a career out of Circuit City, so if your going to buy from someone, look for the younger kids that know more and actually get you pumped to buy something. :-)
I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you live in Minnesota, you have a lot of hard working people at Circuit City waiting to help you out, because that is what is expected of me and I really like taking care of my customers. If they are going to purchase something, I'm going to make them feel confident in what they buy, because I know people have other stuff to spend money on.
So give it a shot, go with the underdog for once, make a purchase with Circuit City and I really think you will be glad you did.
