B.L. Ochman calls out some of the less glamorous aspects of being a weblog author in her recent article in MarketingProfs. Granted, she touches on the positive as well, but I found the flip side far more intriguing this time...
- Blogs are writing intensive.
- Maintaining a blog is hard work.
- Blog software is cheap and easily configured. However, you need to have a designer customize the appearance and navigation of your blog and set up templates to make using it easy for you.
- It takes time, effort and skillful promotion to build an audience for a blog. Just as with a newsletter, report, Web site or e-book, driving traffic to a blog requires marketing.
- You have to register your blog in blog search engines and use subtle PR to push traffic to your blog.
- A blog that isn't well-written and frequently updated will simply be ignored.
- A blog that is an obvious attempt at self-promotion may be mocked by other bloggers.
(If you want more words on this one, see what Gerry McGovern has said about the disadvantages of blogs.)
Great overview by BL. As a blogger I always have to remind myself that at the end of the day it's all about the quality of your content. You can have as many links to your site but will the content keep people coming back / pick up your RSS feed.
