Is Yours a Bikeable Community? - Bicycle Safety Need to Know

As an ardent supporter of cycling and bikeable communities, I know that we are never too far from the reality that bikes are typically NOT considered vehicles, even though they are, and cyclists do NOT obey traffic laws, even though they are required to by law. If you expect the same privileges - you obey the same rules.

I ran across an article today on basic bicycle safety in the city. For any of you that normally ride within city limits, commute to work by bike, or have kids that ride to school, have a quick read of this article.

You can also find a rather comprehensive bicycle safety section at this link:
http://www.kcbd.com/Global/story.asp?S=1480675&nav=CcXGIVZo

Here are a few takeaways.

- Wear a helmet. Period.
- Use lights near dawn, dusk and especially at night. They're cheap - get them for front and rear.
- Follow the same laws as cars. They stop - you stop. Ride single file
- Use hand signals to signal your direction changes. Cars do it - so should you.
