Google Pages - Why?

Dave Winer pointed to Google Pages launching this week. I have to ask "why?" What do we need this crap for and where's Blogger at? How come they didn't make this functionality with blogging in mind.

Oh, and it doesn't support Safari (not surprising, I ran into 3 applications that take a dump on Safari also)

I used it to create this little turd of a page.

This is very "web 1.0" of them. Not that I'm qualified to speak on web 2.0, but when you create semi-useless standalone app that has no connection to content management data, no social underpinnings like trackbacks, blogrolls or other ways to link incessantly, you've essentially created nothing.

Google seems to come up short on social tools. They just seem to believe in the power of content. I don't really understand GoogleBase either.

It may look pretty crap, but guess what will happen if Google starts promoting googlepage pages in search engine results pages... (They used to do that with weblogs didint they?)

Good point, but I don't think they really 'promoted' blogs, but who knows...

So, by that rationale, one should have a "googlepages" address for their company?

Maybe, but I got suckered into that with Froogle...did data extracts and uploads for an ecommerce site that I was managing. Where did that get me - NOWHERE. Where the hell is Froogle now???

Re. Froogle... been there... Done that... You're absolutely right.

But... sadly can we afford to be left behind with developments? I already registered a couple of X.blogpages.com relating to my company just in case.

As for blogs, yes they did do this. Two/three years ago blogs were considred 'good content' by Google spiders so blogs were promoted in SERPS. (The easy way to get listed in Google in less than 15 days was to start a blog on the same new domain name). They since have changed all this...

I concur. I think this is a yawn. The place for this kind of service is gone ... now on the other side ... could this be a preview of a Blogger upgrade?

Yeah, I'd have to agree. Not sure I see the point, although I freely admit that Google is smarter than me. So what have I missed?
