Death by WebEx, via PowerPoint

I've entered a company for whom the word WebEx, which rhymes with 'Kleenex', is synonymous with engaging anyone from a remote location in an Internet PowerPoint presentation. In fact, what used to be a luxury at my former companies has become a daily business tool that is abused almost as frequently as voice mail.

It's astonishing to think of the power that this tool has provided our organization, and just as remarkable to think of the power of the "brandonym" 'WebEx'. Just like saying Kleenex, FedEx, Crescent Wrench, and the like, I've yet to hear someone call a WebEx by it's proper long name (web conference). The downside to all this is that everyones' projects get reduced to bullets on a powerpoint. As we all know by know, death by PPT is a slow and agonizing, not to mention, unoriginal way to go. However, there is help.

The BeConnected blog pointed to this terrific PPT resource on Working Smart. If you're at all interested in making the best out of life behind PowerPoint, I implore you to review at least a few of these resources. Enjoy.

Dana - excellent post as always. You and your readers might want to visit the new Getting Things Done Zone that Michael Hyatt, author of Working Smart, and I are editing at the OfficeZealot.com site. There are a number of articles, resources, and blog links collected in a "GTD Launch Pad" for folks who are looking for ways to be more productive and communicate more effectively.

Any company that uses WebEx just to display PowerPoints is wasting a great resource. My company has saved itself -- and our clients -- a huge amount of money by transferring most training courses and project update meetings to WebEx delivery.
